The Centre was established in 1992, through the generous support of the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities, to provide treatment for disfiguring facial birthmarks. Lions Laser Skin Centre offers a complete range of skin laser treatments: both MSP covered and cosmetic services. If an appropriate treatment is available, disfiguring birthmarks of the face and hands are a MSP covered service at Lions Laser Skin Centre. A percentage of the fees paid for all cosmetic procedures done at The Skin Care Centre goes towards supporting research and development in Dermatology.

Information specific to your procedure will be discussed during your consultation. As with any skin treatment, there is a slight risk of side effects. Side effects following laser treatments are uncommon and reversible. Some skin types are more prone to side effects. The most common side effect is a darkening or lightening of the skin. Scarring is rare.

A common concern is how much pain is involved in the procedure. Pain is an individual experience. Laser treatments are often described as feeling like "an elastic band slapping your skin". If this is a concern, a topical anesthetic (freezing cream) may be applied prior to treatment. This should be discussed during your consultation.

All ages may be treated but young children may find treatment frightening or even painful. Although many children do not require this, there is a special program available for children under 16 to have facial birthmarks treated while under general anaesthetic.. Laser treatments are generally not recommended during pregnancy.
