Creation of New Department of Dermatology and Skin Science
The first dermatology department in Canada has been created at the University of British Columbia.
The Department of Dermatology and Skin Science was officially formed on February 1, 2006, and is the culmination of 6 years of work. This officially recognizes dermatology as a distinct speciality with a specific area of knowledge and proven research productivity within the Faculty of Medicine.
The immediate implications of departmental status will be in expanded dermatology training programs, ensuring dermatology's importance in the medical undergraduate curriculum, enhanced research collaboration among the five dermatology research labs, additional residency positions, and new hiring of faculty members.
Dr. Harvey Lui, Department Head, spearheaded the transition from division to department, and hopes the UBC Department of Dermatology and Skin Science will be the first of many across Canada.
